Kata
Kata or 'forms' consists of various sequences of stances, blocks, kicks, strikes and punches that are meant to simulate different types of physical confrontations with an opponent. It is through the practice of kata that a student is introduced to the principles of self defense contained within each sequence of movements. Kata is both physically and mentally demanding. When done regularly it improves a practitioners balance, speed, and coordination as well as their concentration and focus. Kata is also the historical link between today's karate-ka and the early 'Tou-di' masters that introduced karate to the people of Okinawa.
