Things are slowly returning to normal in some places and I’m happy to see that, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for Karateka and Kobudoka. It will probably be some time before we are able to practice together and even then, we won’t be sure what that will consist of. In the meantime we can continue to practice and study by ourselves.

With that in mind I’d like to invite readers to listen to this two part interview with my good friend and researcher Joe Swift conducted by Cheyne McMahon. Joe has been a longtime resident of Japan and runs the Tokyo Branch of the Mushinkan under the direction of his teacher Uematsu sensei. In the interview Joe touches on many subjects that will be of interest to Karateka, but of particular note is his insights on the influence of mainland Japanese Budo on Okinawa martial arts. This is covered in far more detail in his excellent book on Itosu Anko.
